Lyrics (& song) I Wish I'd Written

The Word, Patti Scialfa
from the CD 'Play It As It Lays'
[expect more, every lyric on this cd is phenomenal!]

Oh, such an ordinary start
For a day that ends with its intent to
break your heart
And I, I thought that I was strong
Was it necessary for me to learn that
I was wrong

The word is out, I've been defeated
I've been laid down low
The word is out, it's time
for me to let go

I know I was walking in my sleep
Through fields of poison
Secrets blooming at my feet
And I, I opened up my eyes
And found myself caught between the
cold hard truth and the soft warm lies

The word is out, I've been defeated
I've been laid down low
The word is out, it's time
for me to let go

Sally don't you go round
round those roses
You don't have to go round,
round them now
There's nothing in those
roses that can hurt you
There's nothing in those
roses that can hurt you now

The word is out, I've been defeated
I've been laid down low
The word is out, it's time
for me to let go

The word is out, I've been defeated
I've been laid down low
The word is out, it's time
for me to let go

Sally don't you go round
round those roses
You don't have to go round,
round them now
There's nothing in those
roses that can hurt you
There's nothing in those
roses that can hurt you now

I love this CD also. The Word is one of my favorite tracks. I read that she started to write it after her father died.

I always wish the artists I truly love (like Scialfa) would create a special insert that explained the inspiration(s) for the songs. Artists like Scialfa, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow - because they're ADULT women, I find their lyrics have infinitely more content for me. Scialfa is just razor sharp, so incisive and insightful, but always a poet.
