The Lost Children of Kenya’s Political Violence

Seeing this photo/article this morning hit me as if my piece for Illustration Friday: Multiple came alive. On one of the comments I received, the question was posed: "How much house do we really need?" I have so MUCH house - I look at this photo and ask how many of these lost children, or other lost children, or entire families, could I actually invite to share that space? We have rooms we don't even use except to stack laundry that awaits folding. Makes me feel so ridiculously ... frivolous, consumeristic, wasteful! And I wouldn't have to go outside of the US, or even beyond Phoenix' city limits, to find those needing help.

Toni, you are so right! We are so spoiled, it's shameful! And most Americans wouldn't think of having their kids share a room these days. Both DH & I shared bedrooms with siblings, but we almost always have a house where all three of our boys have their own rooms. Is that neccessary? I don't feel damaged for having shared a room with my sister. Blessed, more likely! I have so much stamping stuff that I sometimes feel it's sinful, gluttonous, overkill. I try to use my stuff to make people's day a little brighter, but I know I still have more than I need-I want more, too!

Indeed....
Once a month I work with refugee kids taking them through The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore and then making an art project based on the tour. This wonderful organization makes it possible http://www.refugeeyouthproject.org I bet there is something similar in most cities.

Watching children who have lived their whole lives in refugee camps experience art in a museum setting is an incredible experience. And in the studios....WOW! They think of things and make connections to the art in ways I never would have imagined. I can't even begin to describe how profoundly it has affected my thinking about art and my life in general.

Thanks for the post...I love your site!

Yes! If everyone of us care a bit more, we can make a more harmony society! Hopefully pay attention to animal welfare too. :D
