Illustration Friday: CHOOSE

"Choose," the Gestapo officer told Sophie, so casually, so offhandedly. I've never forgotten this movie, never forget, either, that daily parents are forced by untold number of circumstances into this same position. Unconscionable. Vile. Inhumane.

magazine images, antique papers (German and ledger scraps), embossing powder, mica impressed with chicken wire stamp.

This is very powerful and moving. I'll try to give you a short story of a day that changed my life. I was "kidnapped" by a local woman when I was 6 years old. She lived at the top of the alley from me in Boston. Each day she would throw candy out the window to me while I played with other kids in the local schoolyard. One day she had me come upstairs and she kept me there, sobbing, calling me her baby. By nine o'clock that night the police knocked on her door. The kids I was playing with told my parents I was up there. The police took her away, my dad stood there cursing her and calling her names like "crazy German" etc. It wasn't until I became an adult that I realized the numbers across her wrist were her ID# from a concentration camp, and in her mind I was the baby she had to give away. I'll never forget that sweet, kind lady. She never hurt me, but back then people looked at her as "crazy" and after they took her away, I never saw her again, nor was I ever to talk about her. This is what your beautiful collage stirs up for me.

That was a powerful scene and movie, and this is a powerful piece. And wow, how can I even follow what Studio Lolo said. That's scary indeed. And very sad.

I can't believe that anyone who could make a piece of art this cool would think that my little card was over her head! Girl, you could make that card with one hand tied behind your back!

This is a powerful illustration! It draws you end, thinking "Wow, this is pretty, then you really start to examine it and "Pow" you have some strong emotions! Bringing collaging to a new level with social commentary! Keep up the great work!

Very powerful... very emotional... my MIL and I were talking about her experiences in the Japanese internment camps as a little girl and some of her stories came back to me in bits and pieces as I looked at your incredible collage. Not the same era as your piece but still...

Whew, that is a moving piece, and unbearable to think that similiar things still happen - you've tackled a dark subject very sensitively.

You've taken a very complicated emotionally charged topic and created a very descriptive image to capture that story. Great job!
I'm looking forward to your next one.
